$a Twelve-year old Jerome is the latest victim, shot by a white police officer who mistakes his toy gun for a threat. As a ghost, he observes the devastation that's been unleashed on his family and community in the wake of what they see as an unjust and brutal killing. Once again Jewell Parker Rhodes deftly weaves historical and sociopolitical layers into a gripping and poignant story about how children and families face the complexities of today's world.

"The Hochman Method enables students to master the skills that are essential if they are to become competent writers. In turn, those skills equip students to become better readers, to communicate more effectively in writing and speaking, and most importantly, to elevate their thinking. The Writing Revolution, 2e builds on the success of the first edition by staying true to the principles and research that ground the Hochman Method, but providing even more student facing examples that will help teachers incorporate the method into the classroom. The new edition will also incorporate more workbook-based content that is used during the in-person courses. Teachers at all grade levels are expected to have students write narratives and informative and argumentative essays. However, there's been little reliable research-backed guidance on how to teach students those writing skills. The writing standards in the Common Core or similar state standards tell teachers where their students should end up, but what teachers really need is a road map that tells them how to get there. The Writing Revolution (TWR) offers just such a road map"--

Interested in writing but don't know how to get started? Love reading and want to know more about how stories are created? Like ridiculous tales about troublesome sisters, peanut butter and steamrollers? Look no further! Esteemed writer Richard Scrimger is here to answer all your burning questions about writing: whether about plot, character, structure, story hooks or commas. (Actually, don't ask him about commas, it's not that kind of book.) Using clever (so he thinks) analogies, (sort of) brilliant examples and funny (well . . .) anecdotes, he will give you (truly) useful tools to start you on your way as a writer. And if that's not enough, comic illustrations by D. McFadzean are the pepperoni on the writing pizza! (That will make sense once you read the book.) So come, read this book and start your writing journey!

"Learn about the wild, wacky and downright disgusting ways some animals react out of fear. Are you afraid of the dark? Of getting lost? Or of something you saw in a movie? Maybe someone laughed at you for being scared or called you a chicken. That's okay! In fact, it's how humans stay safe in scary situations. While people might run or scream, animals have amazing ways of protecting themselves when they're afraid. Fulmar birds vomit, Texas horned lizards shoot blood from their eyes and hagfish slime their enemies. Full of incredible and sometimes gross animal facts, Mighty Scared explores how mammals, insects, fish and birds around the world respond when scary predators are near." --

"Meet Jim Egan, the activist who fought for equality and human rights for gay Canadians at a time where it was often dangerous for LGBTQ2S+ people to speak up. Born in 1921, Jim had an ordinary childhood. But as he grew up, he knew he was a little different from his friends. He didn't like girls the same way they did. As a young man, Jim joined the war effort and travelled the world. He discovered there were other people like himself -- he was gay. Jim hadn't even known there was a word for it when he was growing up. That's because at the time, being identified as a member of the LGBTQ2S+ community wasn't safe. People lost their jobs and their families, got put in jail -- or worse -- so they hid who they were. But not Jim. He picked up his pen and started to fight for his rights. At first, he wrote letter after letter, in an attempt to get the media to stop portraying gay people in a negative way. Soon he was given a column to write about his community. Jim used his platform to talk about the need for tolerance and for the decriminalization of homosexuality. It was a fight that culminated in the 1995 Supreme Court ruling Egan v. Canada, a case that began in 1987 when Jim wanted his partner Jack to receive the same Old Age Security payment that a married person could get. Jim didn't win, but the case led to sexual orientation becoming a protected ground against discrimination under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which opened the door to other equal rights including same-sex marriage."-- Provided by publisher

Vision -- Smell -- Taste -- Touch -- Hearing. This book presents readers with both curious and practical insights into their canine pals' behavior. For example, early dogs likely survived as scavengers that ate waste left behind by humans, so a taste for garbage and, yes, poop comes naturally to them. (This might still be a gross behavior but framed that way, it does makes sense.) And did you know that dogs have millions more olfactory receptors than humans and that their noses are built to reserve some air that they breathe in just for smelling? So why the butt sniffing? Dogs actually discern a lot of information about another dog from a whiff of that region, including the dog's health, eating habits and readiness to mate. A playful yet scientifically precise exploration of how dogs see, hear, taste, touch, and smell that will help readers better appreciate the canine point of view -- and even explain all the butt sniffing.
